Rock Kitchen Harris has changed. After 42 years of being privately owned, we became employee owned on 7th October 2024. It’s a huge moment in the long history of our agency, and we’d like to talk about why we’ve done it, what it means for us, and what it means for our clients.

Why have we made this change?

We are powered by our people; they are literally the heart of our business. By becoming an Employee Owned Trust (EOT) we’re putting our people front and centre for the next 42 years (and beyond).

Making this decision makes us fit for the future, ensures our continued independence, protects our culture and values, and gives our people a shared voice through our elected employees on the trustee board. We believe by working hard together, we will all benefit together.

One of the most important roles of our EOT is safeguarding the culture, values and ethos that are so important to us here at RKH. We’ve built and maintained these foundations over 42 years in the industry, and they inform who we are, what we do, and how we do it.

We support and advocate:

  • Inclusion and equality, fairness for all
  • Treating others well, looking after each other
  • Open-mindedness and respect
  • Giving everyone equal opportunities.

What this means for RKH

There won’t be many changes to our day-to-day business; we’ll still be doing brilliant work for our clients across our range of services, but there are some clear benefits of becoming employee-owned.

Research from the Knowledge Programme 2023 by the industry body Employee Ownership Association shows that:

  • Over 80% of employees report increased motivation when they become owners
  • After becoming employee-owned, businesses see a 20% increase in performance on average
  • On average, businesses report revenue increases of up to 43% after becoming employee-owned
  • Employees are 8-12% more productive
  • Employee-owned businesses are 73% more likely to have higher employee satisfaction, motivation and work/life balance

Research also shows that employee owned businesses are more likely to give their employees greater wellbeing support, with things like flexible hours and remote working. The wellbeing of everyone at RKH has always been a priority for us, and as we’re a fully remote agency which already offers flexible working, the move to employee ownership further strengthens that commitment.

These benefits, and more, mean that we can continue to deliver the highest standard of service for our clients. We’ll continue to attract and retain the best talent in the industry, and that talent will have a real say in the direction of Rock Kitchen Harris.

This move to employee ownership marks a big milestone in the 42 year history of RKH. It puts all of our people front and centre, whilst ensuring our strong company culture remains as we continue to deliver exceptional work for our clients. I am very much looking forward to taking my seat at the Trustee Directors table and starting this new chapter at RKH.

Jenny Davis, Trustee Director
